MMS leaders met with U.S. Sen. Ed Markey, U.S. Rep. William Keating, and U.S. Rep. Joe Kennedy, and with top staffers from the officers of U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, U.S. Rep. Michael Capuano, U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch,and U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton. The meetings covered many state and federal health care issues and the Society’s recent progress on opioid abuse prevention efforts.
MMS President Richard Pieters, MD, represented the MMS at a meeting with a select group of states with White House staff focused on problems with Medicare. Also this week, the Society offered its formal support for
The Medical Innovation Act, legislation co-sponsored by U.S, Sen. Elizabeth Warren to boost spending for medical research.

The March edition of Physician Focus, the monthly patient education television program from the Massachusetts Medical Society, examines this recent outbreak and the value of vaccines in preventing diseases.
Guests for the program are George Abraham, MD, a board-certified infectious disease specialist, Associate Chief of Medicine at Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester and Sean Palfrey, MD, a board-certified pediatrician practicing at Boston Medical Center and Director of the Immunization Initiative of the Mass. Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Hosting this edition is primary care physician Bruce Karlin, MD.

The MMS Committee on Young Physicians, in collaboration with the Young Lawyers Division of the Massachusetts Bar Association, will co-host a discussion Thursday, March 5 from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. exploring the complete process of a malpractice claim, from incident to resolution at MBA Headquarters, 20 West Street, Boston. A cocktail reception will follow.

The MMS Committee on Geriatric Medicine invites all MMS members to its March 18 meeting featuring Scott Stonington, MD, PhD. Trained as a physician and anthropologist, Dr. Stonington will address cultural differences between the U.S. and Thailand in end-of-life care. He is a clinical fellow in Internal Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital, and a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School. PHS staff and Associate Directors are united by a common mission: to help heal doctors and promote patient safety. We provide confidential support to physicians with substance use and behavioral health concerns/disorders, mental or physical illness and occupational stress.
Part-time Associate Director roles involve a 20-30% time commitment, including a day a week at our Waltham office. Work on other days may be performed at PHS or an office location north of Boston.
